Another blogger reports that at least seventeen movie or television adaptations of Pride and Prejudice have been produced. And that doesn’t include countless stage productions, many of which have passed into obscurity.
But the urge to represent Austen’s stories visually has been strong almost since the very beginning.
Adaptations may vary in quality and faithfulness to the text, but they still try to tell Austen’s stories in some manner.
I have my favorites, as will you, but I’ll try to be fair as I review them.

In addition to adaptations, there are spinoffs that:
- Tell original stories about Austen characters,
- Tell original stories set in Austen’s world, based on the culture, manners, and social barriers Austen describes,
- Tell stories about “modern-day” characters who are influenced by Austen’s writings,
- And more.
