What Spinoffs are Worthwhile?

In addition to adaptations which may vary in faithfulness and quality, but still try to tell Austen’s stories in some manner, there are spinoffs that:

  • Tell original stories about Austen characters,
  • Tell original stories set in Austen’s world, based on the culture, manners, and societal barriers Austen describes,
  • Tell stories about “modern-day” characters who are influenced by Austen’s writings,
  • And more, including a raft of Hallmark Channel “movies” that somehow figure out how to work “Pemberly” or such into the title.

But a few truly original works that nevertheless show respect for Austen’s works – or at least her conventions – stand out.

We’ve started a new page to list the spinoffs we like and would read or watch again – which filters out a lot of “me-too” product. I’m sure the list will grow as I find time to read or watch stories my friends like but seem too redundant or hokey for me to prioritize.
